Transformers are voltage converters. For the lighting transformers are often used to convert the mains voltage of 230 volts (primary) into low voltage (secondary side) of 6, 12 or 24 volts. Low voltage lamps without integral transformer must be operated with the use of single or multiple upstream transformers. The conventional transformer technology works with different windings on the primary and secondary side. Frequently used transformers are toroidal transformers. Smaller, more compact, lighter, quieter and more economical in energy consumption are electronic transformers.
