Compact flourescent lamps (CFL's) are particualy small flourescent lamps and are called very often energy saving lamps. The term energy saving lamp describes also other energy saving illuminants. The tube, where the gas discharge process takes part, is as opposed to other flourescent lamps smaller and curved, coiled or several times folded to save space, hence the prefix "compact". Often these lamps have an integrated ballast and an Edison screwbase, i.e. they can be screwed into sockets instead of the "normal" incandescent bulbs.
